1) Maternity leave

In Russia, paid maternity leave lasts 140 days: 70 before and 70 after childbirth. For twins or triplets, leave increases to 84 days before and 110 after birth. In case of complications, postnatal leave increases to 86 days.

2) Who can receive the benefit?

Unlike childcare benefit, which men may also claim, maternity benefit is available only to women (those employed, dismissed due to an organization’s liquidation within a year, full-time students, and those serving in the military.

Women in these categories may also receive maternity payments when adopting a child.

3) How the payment is calculated

Payment = income for 2 calendar years / number of days in that period × number of maternity-leave days. For example, your income over two years is 720,000 rubles. The payment is therefore 720,000 / 731 × 140 = 137,893.3 rubles.

In 2023, the minimum benefit for childbirth without complications is 74,757.2 rubles and the maximum is 383,178.6 rubles.

4) When pregnancy and childbirth leave ends

A mother may choose to return to work or receive a childcare benefit until the child reaches one and a half years of age. If the mother chooses to work, the benefit may instead be claimed by the father, grandmother or another family member who will actually care for the child. The benefit cannot exceed 40% of average earnings for one child, or 100% of earnings for several children.

5) How to calculate childcare benefit until one and a half

For example, your income over two years was 720,000

720000/730×40%×30.4=11994

30.4 is the average number of calendar days. This year's minimum childcare benefit is RUB 8,591.5, and the maximum is RUB 33,281.8.
