Deputies passed law, which proposes adjusting the concept of ‘upbringing’ in the Federal Law ‘On Education’ and adding an element aimed at instilling diligence and a responsible attitude to work and its results in students.
The initiative's authors propose repealing the rule prohibiting students from being required to work without their consent or their parents' consent (Part 4, Article 34 of the Law on Education in the Russian Federation). Examples of socially useful work could include planting trees and flowers on school grounds, helping decorate classrooms or school grounds for events, and assisting in libraries or museums.
"If parents want their child to grow up a true citizen, the child must develop a positive attitude towards work. Only through work can an attitude be fostered towards many issues they will later need to address," the State Duma chairman noted earlier. Vyacheslav Volodin.
The document also provides that Year 11 graduates whose school certificate contains two ‘good’ grades and all remaining grades ‘excellent’ will receive the second-class ‘For Outstanding Academic Achievement’ medal, a silver medal.
Another innovation in the law is the introduction of career guidance for schoolchildren. The initiative’s authors believe career guidance classes will help pupils choose a profession, for example through visits to businesses. Russia’s Ministry of Education will be responsible for the procedure for implementing career guidance activities in the school curriculum.
The law also changes the school subject's name from Fundamentals of Life Safety to Fundamentals of Safety and Defence of the Homeland.
"If a child is hardworking, their attitude to studying physics, mathematics, foreign languages and much else will be different. The child will grow up differently. Harmony will emerge. Otherwise, we raise consumers," the State Duma chairman added.
Deputies raised the need to restore labour education in schools on 16 November 2022 during Government Hour attended by Education Minister Sergey Kravtsov.
