STANDARD CHILD TAX DEDUCTION: WHAT IS IT AND HOW TO CLAIM IT?

WHO QUALIFIES FOR THE STANDARD CHILD TAX DEDUCTION?

Standard child deduction: what it is and how to obtain it. A standard child deduction reduces the income used to calculate the personal income tax base. Working parents can receive a monthly tax deduction for their children up to a specified amount, so less tax is withheld from their salary.

1. WHO IS ELIGIBLE.

The deduction is available to the child’s parents, their spouses, adopters, trustees and guardians who work, pay personal income tax on salary and are Russian tax residents. It applies at only one workplace and until the child turns 18. If the child enters full-time university study, it continues until age 24 or graduation.

2. WHAT DETERMINES THE DEDUCTION AMOUNT?

The deduction depends on several factors: 1,400 rubles for the first and second child; 3,000 for the third and subsequent children; and, for a child with a Group I or II disability, 12,000 rubles for parents and adopters. Guardians, trustees and foster parents receive 6,000 rubles.

3. A WELCOME DETAIL.

A double tax deduction may be granted to a sole parent or foster parent, adoptive parent, guardian or trustee. It ends if they marry. One parent may also receive a double deduction on the basis of the other parent's application waiving their deduction. This is also possible for foster parents.

4. WHAT ELSE YOU SHOULD KNOW.

Benefits are calculated every calendar month. If a family has several children, the tax deductions are added together. Both parents are entitled if they are officially employed or regularly pay tax on their income, including business income. The deduction applies to income up to 350,000 rubles; from the month this limit is exceeded, entitlement arises again from the beginning of the year.

5. HOW TO CLAIM THE DEDUCTION.

You need to choose how to claim it. Through your employer: you can receive the deduction at work in the current year by applying, and need submit the application only once after the child's birth. Through the tax office: a tax return can claim deductions for previous years, up to a maximum of three years. If filing in 2023, you may claim the standard deduction for 2022, 2021 and 2020.
