Conditions. If you have a child, you may claim a tax deduction and reduce personal income tax. It is available until the child reaches 18, or up to 24 if the child is a full-time university student.
Deduction amount. The first and second child each qualify for 1,400 rubles, and the third and later children for 3,000. This reduces income subject to personal income tax. For children with disabilities, the deduction increases by 12,000 rubles for parents and 6,000 for guardians and trustees.
How to apply. Give your employer the child's birth certificate and submit an application. The employer will then stop withholding part of your tax. You do not need to submit the documents again the following year.
Time limits. The deduction stops in the month when income for the current year exceeds 350,000 rubles. It can be received again from the following year. If you did not receive the child deduction, you can recover it by filing a tax return, but only for the last three years.
Who is entitled? Both parents can claim the deduction. A sole parent receives double. Stepmothers, stepfathers, guardians, adopters, trustees and divorced parents may also claim if they financially support the child.
