Are master’s programmes fulfilling their purpose?

State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin supported Science and Higher Education Minister Valery Falkov, who said at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum that master’s programmes ‘are not properly fulfilling their purpose and serious reforms are needed’.

Vyacheslav Volodin told parliamentary journalists that ‘in many cases students study one subject at bachelor’s level and then continue with a master’s degree in a completely different one’.

"This situation generally harms the quality of professional training: a young specialist in these circumstances lacks the necessary competence. State Duma deputies have repeatedly raised the issue. It is good that Minister of Science and Higher Education Valery Falkov is addressing it," Vyacheslav Volodin noted.
